Vijay Vallabh Surishwer’s life epitomizes the values of humanism and spiritualism, deeply rooted in Jain philosophy. Born in 1870 in Vadodara, he embraced monkhood at a young age, renouncing worldly life to seek peace and salvation of the soul. Under the guidance of his mentor, Jain Acharya Shree Vijayanand Suriji, he imbibed the principles of Ahimsa (non-violence), Anekant (non-absolutism), and Aparigraha (non-possessiveness).
Driven by a vision to uplift society, Vijay Vallabh established educational institutions and service centers, aiming to promote religious understanding and eradicate ignorance, superstition, and illiteracy. His compassionate approach and practical wisdom endeared him to the masses, and he tirelessly traversed the length and breadth of the country to spread his message of moral and spiritual values.
Recognizing the importance of education, especially for women, Vijay Vallabh emphasized the establishment of schools, colleges, and libraries across the nation. He was a proponent of research work and played a significant role in collecting and preserving manuscripts on Indology, contributing to the cultural heritage of India.
During the freedom movement, Vijay Vallabh actively supported the cause, advocating for Swadeshi and wearing Khadi as a symbol of patriotism. His eloquent speeches inspired many, and he collaborated with eminent leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, Pandit Nehru, and Morarji Desai in the struggle for independence.
A prolific writer and poet, Vijay Vallabh penned numerous poems, songs, and hymns in Hindi, reflecting the richness of language and content. His multifaceted contributions to society encompassed education, service, unity, literature, and self-reliance.
Vijay Vallabh’s legacy lives on through the memorial constructed in his honor in Delhi, comprising a Jain Temple, Guru Mandir, Research Institute, School, Museum of Jain Art, and Birds Hospital. India Post commemorates his 150th Birth Anniversary by issuing a Commemorative Postage Stamp, recognizing his profound impact on spirituality, education, and nation-building.
