Lalit Narayan Mishra, born in January 1923 in Basaupatti, Saharsa district of Bihar, was deeply involved in politics from his student days. He played a significant role in organizing the Bihar Provincial Students Congress in 1941, later serving as its Secretary from 1945 to 1946 and as President from 1946 to 1948. Mishra actively participated in the freedom movement and faced imprisonment in 1941 and 1942.

After completing his M.A. in Economics from Patna University, Mishra engaged in research on jute cultivation in Bihar and served as a Fellow of the Patna University Senate from 1948 to 1949. He rose to national prominence in 1950 when he became a Member of the All India Congress Committee.

Mishra’s political career saw him serving as a Member of the First and Second Lok Sabha from 1952 to 1962. He was elected to the Rajya Sabha in 1964 and later became a member of the Congress Working Committee in December 1972.

Throughout his career, Mishra held various high-ranking positions in the government, including roles such as Parliamentary Secretary for Planning, Labour, and Employment (1957-1960), Deputy Minister for Labour, Employment, and Planning (1960-1962), Deputy Minister for Home Affairs (1964-1966), Deputy Finance Minister (1966-1967), Minister of State for Labour, Employment, and Rehabilitation (March-November 1967), Minister of State for Defence Production (1967-1970), and Minister of Foreign Trade (1970-February 1973).

As Minister of Railways from February 5, 1973, Mishra played a crucial role in overseeing the expansion and modernization of India’s railway infrastructure. However, tragedy struck during his visit to Samastipur on January 2, 1975, when he was seriously injured in a bomb explosion on the dais. Despite being rushed to the Railway Hospital at Danapur, Mishra succumbed to his injuries on January 3, 1975.

In honor of Lalit Narayan Mishra’s contributions and sacrifice, the Posts and Telegraphs Department issued a commemorative postage stamp on the occasion of his first death anniversary.
