Inaugration of Indian Airlines Airbus Service

Indian Airlines, established in 1953 as a public sector undertaking, has evolved into a significant enterprise with a valuation of Rs. 110 crores. With a workforce of approximately 15,000 employees, its operations span across India, from Srinagar in the north to Porbandar in the west. The airline’s network facilitates same-day travel from one end of the sub-continent to the other, offering seamless connectivity for passengers.

As a member of the International Air Transport Association, Indian Airlines has remained abreast of advancements in aviation technology. The airline’s fleet has undergone progressive modernization, transitioning from Dakotas and Skymasters to a diverse range of aircraft, including Boeing 737s, Caravelles, F-27s, Viscounts, HS-748s, and Airbus A300 B2 aircraft. Notably, the airline’s fleet expansion includes the introduction of the Airbus A300 B2, with an additional aircraft expected to join the fleet in January 1977.

The advent of the jet era in India commenced with the introduction of Caravelles in 1963, significantly reducing flying time with their efficiency and medium-sized jet capabilities. Subsequent modernization efforts, such as the introduction of Boeing 737s in 1970, further enhanced the airline’s network and service offerings.

India’s natural beauty, historical monuments, art, and culture attract a substantial number of tourists annually, with nearly half a million visitors arriving in 1975. Indian Airlines plays a pivotal role in facilitating tourism, with approximately 85 percent of tourists traveling via the airline. The airline’s daily passenger traffic exceeds 10,000 individuals.

With the induction of the Airbus A300 B2 into Indian Airlines’ network in December 1976, a new chapter unfolds in the history of Indian Civil Aviation. This state-of-the-art aircraft, equipped with two CF6-50 engines, offers faster and quieter travel for passengers. Operating on trunk routes such as Bombay-Delhi, Bombay-Calcutta, Bombay-Madras, Bombay-Bangalore, and Delhi-Calcutta, the Airbus A300 B2 can accommodate 278 passengers along with 10 tonnes of cargo on each flight.

The introduction of the Airbus A300 B2 is poised to stimulate economic growth and expedite the development of hinterlands. In commemoration of this milestone, the Indian Posts and Telegraphs Department is honored to issue a commemorative postage stamp, marking the significance of this achievement in Indian aviation history.
