Hemu Kalani exemplifies the spirit of bravery and sacrifice that characterized India’s struggle for independence. Born on March 23, 1923, in Sukkur, Sind (now in Pakistan), Hemu was imbued with a deep sense of patriotism from a young age. His courageous actions and unwavering commitment to the cause of freedom earned him a revered place among India’s revolutionary martyrs.
Even as a child, Hemu demonstrated his dedication to the nation’s cause. At the tender age of seven, he led his peers in waving the tricolor flag and advocating for the boycott of foreign goods. As he grew older, he became actively involved in revolutionary activities, organizing raids and participating in acts of terrorism aimed at overthrowing British rule.
In 1942, when Mahatma Gandhi issued the clarion call of “Quit India” and “Do or die,” Hemu Kalani wholeheartedly joined the mass movement. He played a pivotal role in the active resistance against British oppression in the Sind Province. When he learned of the arrival of special British troops and ammunition by train, Hemu devised a plan to derail the train and disrupt their operations.
Despite facing numerous obstacles and lacking proper tools, Hemu remained undeterred. He inspired his comrades to improvise and carry out the plan using indigenous methods. However, their efforts were thwarted when they were discovered by British troops. In a selfless act of bravery, Hemu sacrificed himself to protect his friends and comrades.
Arrested, imprisoned, and subjected to torture, Hemu Kalani refused to betray his fellow revolutionaries. Even in the face of death, he remained steadfast in his commitment to the cause of India’s freedom. Despite appeals for mercy from the people of Sind, Hemu embraced his impending execution with unwavering courage and cheerfulness.
Hemu Kalani’s sacrifice serves as a poignant reminder of the indomitable spirit of India’s freedom fighters. His fearless actions and unyielding devotion to his motherland continue to inspire generations of Indians. The commemorative stamp issued by the Indian Posts and Telegraphs Department pays homage to the legacy of this great martyr, ensuring that his courage and sacrifice are forever etched in the annals of India’s history.
