The 7th Light Cavalry Regiment is a distinguished regiment with a rich history dating back to its formation in 1784. Originating from drafts of three regiments of local cavalry taken over by the East India Company at Arcot near Madras, the regiment has participated in numerous significant military operations both within India and overseas.
Key Historical Highlights:
- World War I: The regiment was actively engaged in Persia, Russia, Transcapia, and Afghanistan, demonstrating exceptional bravery and skill.
- World War II: It played a crucial role in the siege of Imphal and advanced through Burma, being the first to reach Rangoon. For its gallant actions, it was selected by Lord Louis Mountbatten to represent the Occupation Forces in Japan, a unique honor among Commonwealth cavalry regiments.
Post-Independence Achievements:
- Jammu and Kashmir Operations (1947-49): The 7th Light Cavalry drove away Pakistani raiders and participated in key battles at Uri, Naushera, Poonch, and Jhangar. Notably, it created history by taking tanks to heights of 11,000 feet at Zoji La, securing the Ladakh province.
- Goa Operations (1961): The regiment led the Army’s advance on two axes into Goa, contributing to the liberation of the state.
- NEFA Operations (1962): During the Sino-Indian War, it performed commendably at Bomdi La and Diriong Dzong, aiding in the withdrawal of the 4 Infantry Division.
- Indo-Pak Wars (1965 and 1971): The regiment fought valiantly in the areas of Burki, Chattanwala, and Khem Karan in 1965. In the 1971 war, it led the advance on the Sakhargarh-Zafarwal road, and the No. 1 Independent Armoured Squadron operated in Bangladesh. The regiment emerged as the most decorated unit of the Indian Army post-1971 war.
Honors and Decorations:
- Battle Honors: 21 battle honors have been conferred upon the regiment for its exemplary service.
- Awards: To date, the regiment has received 239 awards, making it one of the most highly decorated units in the Indian Army.
In recognition of its meritorious service, the Indian Posts & Telegraphs Department issued a commemorative stamp to mark the bi-centenary of the 7th Light Cavalry, celebrating its storied legacy and contributions to the nation.
