Acharya Tulsi was a renowned Jain spiritual leader, philosopher, social reformer, and founder of the Anuvrat Movement. He played a transformative role in promoting moral values, self-discipline, social harmony, and spiritual awakening in modern India.

Early Life of Acharya Tulsi

Acharya Tulsi was born on 20 October 1914 in a Jain family at Ladnun.

He lost his father in childhood and was raised by his mother. Drawn toward spirituality from an early age, he entered ascetic life at just 11 years old.

At the age of 22, he was appointed Acharya (Supreme Head) of the Jain Shwetambar Terapanth order by his guru Acharya Kalugani.

Founder of the Anuvrat Movement

On 2 March 1949, Acharya Tulsi launched the historic Anuvrat Movement.

The movement aimed to strengthen human values through small personal vows of discipline known as Anuvratas.

Its guiding principle was:

“Self-discipline alone is life.”

The movement encouraged people of all backgrounds—regardless of caste, creed, or religion—to adopt moral living and ethical behavior.

Social Reform and Women’s Upliftment

Acharya Tulsi was not only a spiritual leader but also a progressive social reformer.

He strongly advocated:

  • Women’s upliftment
  • Equality and dignity
  • National integration
  • Moral education
  • Character building in society

For his contribution to unity and harmony, he received the Indira Gandhi National Integration Award in 1992.

Scholar, Writer, and Linguist

Acharya Tulsi was an accomplished scholar, poet, singer, and orator.

He had deep knowledge of several languages, including:

  • Prakrit
  • Sanskrit
  • Hindi
  • Rajasthani

He authored more than 50 books in Sanskrit, Hindi, and Rajasthani, enriching spiritual and literary traditions.

Contribution to Jain Canonical Literature

In 1995, Acharya Tulsi undertook a major scholarly mission to research the Agamas, the sacred Jain canonical texts.

Under his guidance, critical editions of all 32 Agamas were prepared and published.

This was considered an unprecedented achievement in 1,500 years of Jain history.

Jain Vishva Bharati Institute

Under his inspiration, the Jain Vishva Bharati Institute was established in 1971 at Ladnun.

The institute focused on:

  • Research
  • Practical spiritual training
  • Value-based education

In 1991, it was granted Deemed University status by the Government of India and the UGC.

Acharya Tulsi was recognized as its first Anushasta (Disciplinarian).

Honors and Recognition

  • Vakpati (D.Litt. Honoris Causa) conferred by the Tibetan Buddhist Research Institute at Sarnath in 1992 by Dalai Lama
  • Felicitation by Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan in 1962
  • Honored by Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed in 1974
  • Conferred the title Yugapradhan Acharya in 1972
  • Awarded Bharati Jyoti in 1985 by Rajasthan Vidyapeeth, presented by Giani Zail Singh

Renunciation and Passing

In 1994, Acharya Tulsi made an exemplary decision to voluntarily renounce the post of Acharya.

He passed away on 23 June 1997 at the age of 83 in Gangashahar.

His life remains a shining example of humility, discipline, and service.

Commemorative Stamp

To honor his immense contribution, the Department of Posts issued a commemorative postage stamp on the birth anniversary of Yug Pradhan Acharya Shri Tulsi.

The stamp celebrated him as the founder of the Anuvrat Movement and Jain Vishva Bharati Institute.
