Balai Chand Mukhopadhyay, ‘Banaphool’
India Post issued this ₹3 stamp on 19 July 1999 for the birth centenary of Balai Chand Mukhopadhyay (1899–1979), a Bengali writer, physician and playwright best known by his pen name, Banaphul. His work spans novels, poetry, plays, essays and more than 400 short stories, the form for which he is best remembered. He was awarded the Padma Bhushan, India’s third-highest civilian honour, in 1975. India Post’s brochure for this issue is not online, so this text draws on Wikipedia and on the stamp itself.
