Santidev Ghose (1910 -1999)

Santidev Ghose (1910-1999) was a distinguished figure in the world of Rabindrasangeet and dance, deeply connected with the cultural heritage of West Bengal. A teacher, scholar, and writer, Ghose’s contributions spanned across the performing arts, particularly in preserving and promoting the musical and dance traditions shaped by Rabindranath Tagore.

Early Life and Education:

Born in Chandpur, now part of Bangladesh, Ghose moved to Santiniketan as an infant. Santiniketan, being the hub of Rabindranath Tagore’s artistic and educational vision, provided Ghose with an ideal environment to nurture his innate talent for the performing arts. Tagore himself mentored the young Santidev, recognizing his potential early on. Ghose accompanied Tagore on various cultural tours across India and Sri Lanka, forming a close bond with the maestro.

Career and Contributions:

Santidev Ghose’s career as an educator began in 1930 when he joined the Sangeet Bhavana at Visva-Bharati University. He later served as Principal of the institution twice, continuing his mission of preserving Tagore’s artistic legacy. Tagore, before his death in 1941, entrusted Ghose with the important responsibility of safeguarding the purity of Rabindrasangeet (Tagore songs). This task became Ghose’s lifelong mission, and he disseminated Tagore’s music through performances, writings, and teachings.

Works and Writings:

Ghose authored several significant books in Bengali, making a vital contribution to the literature on Rabindrasangeet and dance. His works, such as Rabindra Sangeet, Java o Balir Nritya Geet (on the music and dance of Java and Bali), and Rabindranather Pumanga Sikshadarshey Sangeet o Nritya (on music and dance in Tagore’s educational philosophy), became essential texts for students and enthusiasts of Tagore’s arts.

Revival of Folk Arts:

While Rabindrasangeet remained central to Ghose’s work, he also played a key role in revitalizing the folk arts of Bengal. He championed the resurgence of Fakir songs, Chhau dance, and Alkap theatre, promoting a blend of traditional folk forms with urban artistic expressions. This helped bridge the gap between the classical and folk cultures of Bengal.

Awards and Recognitions:

Throughout his life, Ghose received numerous accolades, including:

  • Padma Bhushan (1988) for his outstanding contributions to Indian culture.
  • Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship (1976).
  • Desikottama (D.Litt. Honoris Causa) from Visva-Bharati (1988).
  • A special Russian Medal (1961).
  • Rabindra Tattvacharya from the Tagore Research Institute, Kolkata.

Legacy:

Santidev Ghose’s work ensured that Rabindrasangeet and dance remained relevant and widely appreciated without compromising their integrity. His ability to make these art forms accessible to the public, combined with his efforts to revive Bengal’s folk traditions, left a lasting impact on India’s cultural landscape.

The Department of Posts issued a commemorative stamp in his honor, celebrating his enduring legacy and contributions to Indian music and dance.
