Early Life and Background

A.M.M. Murugappa Chettiar was born on 22 January 1902 at Pallathur in the Ramnad District of Tamil Nadu. He was the son of A. M. Murugappa Chettiar. From a young age, he displayed remarkable maturity and strong business acumen, which later played a crucial role in shaping his entrepreneurial journey.

Vision for Industrial Development

Murugappa Chettiar recognized the importance of developing light and medium engineering industries in India at a time when the country was striving to build its industrial infrastructure. Guided by this vision, he established Tube Investments of India in collaboration with the British firm Tube Investments Ltd..

Under his leadership, several major manufacturing units were established, including:

• Wrights Saddles India
• TI Diamond Chain
• TI Miller

These companies produced well-known international brands such as Hercules Cycles, Phillips Cycles, and BSA Cycles, along with bicycle components, industrial chains, electric resistance welded tubes, and dynamo lamps.

Another significant industrial venture initiated by Murugappa Chettiar was Carborundum Universal Limited in Chennai. This enterprise was set up in collaboration with Carborundum Company Limited to manufacture abrasives and grinding stones.

He also played a key role in establishing Coromandel Engineering Company Limited and several other industries. Over time, these ventures evolved into a large industrial group engaged in diverse sectors such as:

• President of the Southern India Chamber of Commerce

He also achieved the distinction of becoming the first Indian elected as President of the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI).

Despite his success in business, Murugappa Chettiar remained deeply committed to social welfare and public service. To support charitable initiatives, he established the A. M. M. Charities Trust, now known as the AMM Foundation.

Through this foundation, several educational and healthcare institutions were established, including:
