Introduction
Ayothidasa Pandithar was a pioneering social reformer, educationist, and visionary thinker who worked tirelessly for social equality and justice. Far ahead of his time, he challenged rigid social practices and advocated the upliftment of the poor and marginalized sections of society in Tamil Nadu.
Early Life and Education
Ayothidasa Pandithar was born on 20 May 1845 in Coimbatore. His parents originally named him Kathavarayan. Later, after gaining expertise in traditional Siddha medicine, he adopted the name Ayothidasa Kaviraj Pandithar, reflecting his scholarly achievements and medical knowledge.
Social Reform Initiatives
A dedicated social worker and philanthropist, Ayothidasa Pandithar actively campaigned against the caste system and untouchability. He strongly advocated social equality and fought against orthodox social practices that discriminated against the oppressed communities.
In 1870, he founded the Advaithantha Sabha in the Nilgiris region. Later, in 1891, he established the Dravida Mahayana Sabha, which promoted progressive ideas and social awareness among the people.
His reformist vision and social activism made him a forerunner to later leaders such as B. R. Ambedkar and E. V. Ramasamy, who also fought for social justice and equality.
Contributions to Literature and Journalism
Ayothidasa Pandithar was also an accomplished writer and journalist. In 1907, he started a weekly publication titled “Oru Paisa Thamizhan”, which became an important platform for spreading social reform ideas and encouraging public awareness.
He authored more than 20 books covering a wide range of subjects. A gifted orator, he was fluent in several languages including Tamil, Sanskrit, Pali, and English.
Buddhist Thought and Cultural Influence
Ayothidasa Pandithar offered fresh interpretations of the works of classical Tamil poets such as Tiruvalluvar and Avvaiyar. He interpreted their teachings through the lens of Buddhist philosophy, providing new insights into Tamil literary traditions.
He also founded the Chakkia Buddhist Association, which gained considerable support among social and political groups. Through this initiative, he helped revive Buddhist thought and offered a new intellectual direction to Tamil literature and social discourse.
Legacy and Commemoration
Ayothidasa Pandithar passed away in 1914. However, his progressive ideas and tireless efforts for social justice left a deep and lasting impact on society.
In recognition of his remarkable contributions, the India Post issued a commemorative postage stamp to honour his legacy and his role in promoting equality and social reform in India.
