UNICEF 75 Years in India – Commemorative Postage Stamp
The Department of Posts proudly releases a commemorative postage stamp on 75 Years of UNICEF in India, celebrating the organization’s remarkable journey of protecting and empowering children since 1949. This special issue honors UNICEF’s enduring partnership with India and its unwavering commitment to uphold the rights and well-being of every child.
UNICEF’s Mission – For Every Child
Established in the aftermath of World War II, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) began with a clear mandate: to protect, support, and uplift children at risk, no matter who they are or where they live. Guided by the principle For Every Child, UNICEF works across 190+ countries and territories, ensuring survival, education, health, equality, and protection for the most vulnerable.
UNICEF in India – A 75-Year Journey
UNICEF’s work in India began in 1949, making it one of the organization’s largest and most significant country programmes. With India being home to one in every five children worldwide, UNICEF’s efforts here have had a global impact.
For 75 years, UNICEF has partnered with the Government of India and State Governments to:
- Expand access to healthcare, nutrition, and education.
- Support women empowerment and child protection.
- Fight major diseases, including malaria, polio, and guinea worm.
- Strengthen rural water supply, sanitation, and hygiene.
- Provide vital relief during droughts, floods, and pandemics.
UNICEF played a crucial role in landmark initiatives such as the National Mission on Immunization, Swachh Bharat Mission, and most recently, India’s COVID-19 pandemic response.
Celebrating UNICEF@75
On 10 May 2024, UNICEF marked 75 years of partnership with India, reaffirming its dedication to reaching the last mile and the last child in need. The year-long celebrations reflect progress made, while recommitting to unfinished goals aligned with India Vision 2047 and the global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The theme for the anniversary campaign is “UNICEF with India”, symbolizing shared responsibility in building a safe, healthy, and fair future for every child.
The Commemorative Stamp
The UNICEF@75 India stamp stands as a tribute to seven decades of progress for children. It highlights UNICEF’s vital role in transforming child health, education, and protection in India. Issued by the Department of Posts, the stamp is not only a collector’s delight but also a reminder of India’s progress in advancing children’s rights and well-being.
