Maharana Pratap, born on May 9, 1540, stands as a towering figure in history, revered not for conquests or riches, but for his unwavering commitment to moral principles and the cause of liberty. Upon succeeding to the throne of Mewar on February 28, 1572, he faced the daunting challenge of resisting Akbar’s encroachment on his kingdom.
Despite Akbar’s overtures, Maharana Pratap refused to acknowledge him as his sovereign, prioritizing liberty and independence above all else. He chose the path of relentless struggle against the might of the Mughals rather than compromising his honor. With courage and determination, he rallied his men to stand firm against the oppressors, embodying the valorous spirit of the Rajputs.
In the decisive battle of Haldighati, Maharana Pratap, though outnumbered, fought fiercely before tactically withdrawing to avoid capture or death. He then reorganized his forces and continued the struggle against the Mughals, thwarting their repeated attempts to subdue Mewar.
For twenty-five years, Maharana Pratap remained a symbol of resistance, faithfully representing the aspirations of his people. His demise on January 19, 1597, marked the end of an era, leaving behind a legacy of moral fortitude and steadfastness in the face of adversity.
Maharana Pratap’s name is etched in the annals of Indian history as a valiant champion of liberty, emphasizing the moral dimension of his struggle. In honor of his enduring legacy, the Posts & Telegraphs Department proudly issued a special stamp on June 11, 1967, commemorating this great son of India.
