Narayan Guru, originally known as Nanu, was born in a humble village near Trivandrum in 1855 to parents of simple means. Despite his modest upbringing, his spirit was nurtured in an environment of gentleness and humanity. From a young age, he displayed scholarly traits, which continued to develop as he embarked on a quest for truth.

After losing his mother at the age of 15, Narayan Guru retreated to the mountainous region near Cape Comorin, living in caves and engaging in intense introspection. Emerging from seclusion, he became a revered spiritual teacher, traveling tirelessly for 15 years to impart wisdom and enlightenment to the people.

Narayan Guru’s teachings emphasized universal human values and the importance of self-discovery. He believed that the self was the key to understanding human existence and that religion should focus on improving human relations and elevating individuals to higher moral standards.

His philosophy emphasized meditation and contemplation for a better understanding of life, contrasting with empty arguments and doctrinal disputes. He advocated for a religion that embraced all creeds as long as they promoted common human goodness.

Narayan Guru’s life exemplified his teachings, as he lived by the principle of selfless action for the benefit of others. His passing on September 20, 1928, marked the end of a life dedicated to the spiritual upliftment of his fellow beings.

In honor of his birthday on August 21, the Posts and Telegraphs Department proudly issued a special postage stamp commemorating his contributions to humanity and his enduring legacy of wisdom and compassion.
