The practice of apiculture, or bee-keeping, has thrived in developed countries, yet its full potential remains untapped in many developing nations, particularly those in tropical regions. These countries boast rich flora and favorable climates, presenting ideal conditions for beekeeping to flourish. With a pressing need to create employment and income opportunities in rural areas, apiculture holds promise as a viable economic venture.

Research and development efforts have shown that beekeeping can offer stable employment and income in rural areas. However, to realize its widespread impact, it’s crucial to develop appropriate technological packages and provide adequate support and services. Recognizing the significance of apiculture for honey production and crop pollination, an international conference was held in London in 1976, resulting in recommendations that spurred further research and development activities in tropical climates.

The Second International Conference, hosted in New Delhi by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research in collaboration with various organizations, aims to address the constraints hindering the productivity of apiculture systems in the tropics. The conference will focus on identifying these constraints and devising a comprehensive action plan to harness the potential of apiculture for generating gainful employment in rural areas of developing tropical countries.

The Indian Posts & Telegraphs Department takes pride in commemorating the Second International Conference on Apiculture in Tropical Climates by issuing a special stamp, recognizing the importance of this event in advancing apiculture and rural development efforts worldwide.
