Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, born in 1630 (though some historians suggest 1627) at Shivneri, a hill fortress in the Pune district of Maharashtra, emerged as a formidable force in Indian history. His father, Shahaji Bhonsle, and his mother, Jijabai, played crucial roles in shaping his character, with his mother being the guiding spirit throughout his life.
At the age of 19, Shivaji embarked on a career of daring military exploits by occupying Torana and subsequently capturing several forts while uniting Maratha chieftains in the region. He employed guerrilla tactics to defeat the Adil Shahi forces and successfully resisted the advances of the Mughal Empire.
Despite facing the might of the Mughal armies, Shivaji managed to carve out an extensive territory and was formally crowned in a resplendent ceremony at the Raigad fort in 1674. He passed away in 1680, leaving behind a legacy of patriotism, valor, and enlightened rule.
Shivaji’s administration prioritized justice, religious tolerance, and equality. He ensured the protection of all religions, patronized individuals of diverse faiths, and provided equal opportunities to his subjects, regardless of creed.
His name continues to inspire generations, and his brave deeds have been immortalized in countless ballads. The Indian Posts & Telegraphs Department pays tribute to this great son of India by issuing a commemorative stamp, honoring Shivaji’s enduring legacy in Indian history.
