Freedom Fighter, Aviator and Visionary Leader of Odisha
Biju Patnaik (1916–1997) was one of the most dynamic leaders of post-independence India. A freedom fighter, daring pilot, industrialist, and statesman, he played an important role both in India’s struggle for independence and in the development of Odisha.
To honor his remarkable contributions, the Department of Posts issued a commemorative postage stamp on Biju Patnaik.
Early Life and Family Background
Biju Patnaik was born in 1916 into a distinguished family that actively worked for social reform. His family supported efforts to remove caste discrimination and promote equality for women.
From a young age, Biju Patnaik showed exceptional talent in academics as well as extracurricular activities. He was adventurous, energetic, and deeply patriotic.
A major turning point in his life came in 1927, when at the age of thirteen he met Mahatma Gandhi in Cuttack. This meeting inspired him to join the struggle against British rule in India.
Biju Patnaik During World War II
During the Second World War, Biju Patnaik used his skills as a pilot in several dangerous missions.
He helped evacuate women and children from Burma during the Japanese invasion. He also flew missions into China when the country was resisting Japanese occupation.
Biju Patnaik even participated in operations connected with the Russian theatre of war, demonstrating both courage and exceptional flying ability.
Role in the Indian Freedom Movement
In 1942, Biju Patnaik became actively involved in the Quit India Movement launched by Mahatma Gandhi.
Because of his participation in the movement, he was arrested and imprisoned by the British government in 1942. He remained in prison until 1946.
His commitment to India’s independence made him one of the prominent freedom fighters from Odisha.
Heroic Mission in Indonesia
After his release from prison, Biju Patnaik undertook one of the most daring missions of his life.
Along with his young wife, he flew through the Dutch blockade of Java to establish contact with Indonesian resistance leaders fighting for independence.
He successfully rescued two Indonesian leaders and brought them safely to Delhi.
This courageous act earned him great respect in Indonesia, where he is remembered as a friend of the Indonesian freedom movement.
Contribution During the Kashmir Crisis
Soon after India became independent in 1947, Pakistan launched an attack on Kashmir.
During this critical period, Biju Patnaik played an important role by air-dropping Indian troops into Srinagar.
He also helped evacuate civilians from danger zones, contributing significantly to India’s defense efforts in Kashmir.
Biju Patnaik and the Development of Odisha
Apart from his national and international achievements, Biju Patnaik devoted himself to the progress of Odisha.
He established Odisha’s first textile mills, iron ore mines, and manganese mines. These industries created employment and contributed to the state’s economic development.
Biju Patnaik was also instrumental in setting up three universities in Odisha, recognizing the importance of higher education.
One of his greatest achievements was the development of Paradip Port, which became the largest man-made deep-water port in Asia.

Creation of the Kalinga Prize
