Franklin Delano Roosevelt, born on January 30, 1882, in Hyde Park, New York, was the only son of James Roosevelt and Sara Delano Roosevelt. He received a private education, attending Groton and Harvard, as well as Columbia University, before being admitted to the Bar in 1907. His political career began with notable positions such as New York State Senator, Assistant Secretary of the Navy, and two-term Governor of New York State.

Roosevelt’s presidency, spanning from 1933 to 1945, marked a significant period in American history. Despite being afflicted with poliomyelitis in 1921, he displayed remarkable vigor and leadership throughout his tenure. Roosevelt’s administration implemented the groundbreaking ‘New Deal’ Program to combat the Great Depression, initiating extensive public works projects, farm subsidies, and legislation aimed at addressing issues between capital and labor.

Under his leadership, the United States witnessed the enactment of crucial social legislation, leaving a lasting legacy. In 1933, Roosevelt extended recognition to the U.S.S.R., ending U.S. isolationism. During World War II, he provided substantial support to Great Britain against Germany, contributing to the Allied victory.

Beyond politics, Roosevelt had diverse interests, including stamp collecting. His avid pursuit of this hobby not only reflected his personal passion but also bolstered support for stamp collecting in the United States and worldwide. The Franklin D. Roosevelt Philatelic Society of St. Augustine, Florida, stands as a testament to his enduring influence in this realm.

Roosevelt passed away on April 12, 1945, in Warm Springs, Georgia, and was laid to rest at Hyde Park, New York. In recognition of his contributions and legacy, the Indian Posts and Telegraphs Department is honored to issue a commemorative stamp in his honor.
