Tandon graduated from the Muir Central College, Allahabad, in 1904, obtaining degrees in Law and History. He commenced his legal career in 1906 and later joined the Bar of the Allahabad High Court as the junior of Sir Tej Bahadur Sapru.
Political Activism and Contribution to Freedom Struggle
Tandon’s association with the Indian National Congress began during his student years in 1899. He played a pivotal role in various Congress committees and actively participated in the Non-cooperation Movement, facing imprisonment in 1921. Notably, he organized the Allahabad District Peasants’ Committee in 1918 and led the ‘No Tax’ campaign in 1930, earning praise from Jawaharlal Nehru.
Leadership and Legislative Roles
Tandon’s leadership extended to various spheres, including serving as the speaker of the Legislative Assembly of Uttar Pradesh. He was elected to the Constituent Assembly in 1946, the Lok Sabha in 1952, and the Rajya Sabha in 1956. His parliamentary contributions were significant, advocating for the interests of farmers and the promotion of Hindi language and literature.
Contribution to Hindi Language and Literature
Tandon devoted a considerable portion of his life to the propagation and development of Hindi language and literature. He championed the use of the mother tongue as the medium of education and emphasized the importance of ancient cultural heritage in students’ education.
Legacy and Recognition
Mahatma Gandhi fondly referred to Tandon as ‘Rajarshi,’ recognizing his unwavering dedication to the national cause. In 1961, Tandon was honored with the title of ‘Bharat Ratna’ for his exceptional contributions. He passed away on July 1, 1962, leaving behind a legacy of courage, sacrifice, and steadfast adherence to his beliefs.
