Chetan Anand was a pioneering filmmaker, producer, screenwriter and one of the most respected creative voices in early Hindi cinema. His debut film, Neecha Nagar (1946), earned the Palme d’Or (Grand Prix) at the very first Cannes Film Festival, marking a historic global recognition for Indian cinema.

Known for his realistic storytelling, poetic visual language, and deep humanism, Chetan Anand went on to make several acclaimed films. His war drama Haqeeqat (1964) won the National Film Award for Second Best Feature Film, and his film Kudrat (1981) won him the Filmfare Best Story Award in 1982.

He was also the elder brother of actor Dev Anand, and together they contributed significantly to shaping the golden era of Hindi cinema.

Commemoration

A commemorative postage stamp was issued on Chetan Anand as part of the ‘100 Years of Indian Cinema’ series, honouring his remarkable achievements and his historic Palme d’Or-winning film Neecha Nagar.
