Dr. Dadabhoy Naoroji, affectionately known as the “Grand Old Man of India,” was born on September 4, 1825, in Navsari, Gujarat, and passed away on June 30, 1917, at the age of ninety-two. Despite hailing from a humble background and losing his father early in life, Naoroji displayed exceptional intelligence from a young age. He excelled academically, earning scholarships that supported his higher education.

His proficiency in Mathematics drew the attention of his professors, one of whom offered financial assistance for further studies in England. However, due to financial constraints, Naoroji had to seek employment to support himself. In 1885, he eventually traveled to England and worked there for a period.

Moved by patriotism and the turmoil of the 1857 Revolution in India, Naoroji decided to return home and serve his motherland. He became one of the founding members of the Indian National Congress and presided over its Lahore Session in 1893. Notably, he was elected as a Member of the British Parliament in 1892, becoming the first Indian to achieve this milestone. In Parliament, he eloquently represented India’s case for responsible government to the elected representatives of Great Britain.

A distinguished scholar and prolific writer, Naoroji authored numerous publications on social, educational, and political issues. Despite his renown, he led a simple life, earning the respect of figures like Mahatma Gandhi, who sought his advice.

In honor of his birth anniversary, the Posts and Telegraphs Department has issued a commemorative stamp, recognizing Naoroji’s significant contributions to India and his legacy as a patriot and visionary.
