Dayanand Saraswati, born as Mool Shankara in 1824, embarked on a transformative journey from his affluent Brahmin upbringing to becoming one of India’s most influential reformers. His quest for true knowledge led him to renounce his familial comforts and embrace the life of a Sannyasi, ultimately adopting the name Dayanand Saraswati.
Under the guidance of his Guru, Swami Virjananda Saraswati, Dayanand pledged to dedicate his life to spreading Vedic knowledge and eradicating ignorance from society. He emerged as a beacon of enlightenment, advocating a return to the Vedas and challenging misinterpretations of Vedic tradition.
Dayanand Saraswati’s vision extended beyond spiritual revival; he laid the groundwork for Indian nationalism long before the Indian National Congress, advocating concepts like Swaraj and Swadeshi. His patriotism and progressive ideas influenced a generation of freedom fighters, including Bhagat Singh, Lala Lajpat Rai, and Ram Prasad Bismil.
His impact transcended national boundaries, earning admiration from figures like Annie Besant and Mahatma Gandhi, who lauded his stance against untouchability. Dayanand Saraswati’s Arya Samaj movement championed social reform, including efforts to uplift marginalized communities and address gender inequality.
Despite facing resistance from orthodox elements, Dayanand Saraswati remained steadfast in his belief in the equality of women, rooted in Vedic teachings. His tireless efforts to challenge societal norms and promote social justice continue to inspire generations.
The Department of Posts honors the legacy of Dayanand Saraswati with a Commemorative Postage Stamp, recognizing his immense contributions as a social reformer, political visionary, and true patriot.
