International Fleet Review (IFR-2001)

The International Fleet Review (IFR-2001) was a significant event commemorating the Golden Jubilee of the Indian Republic and showcasing India’s maritime heritage and international naval relations. Here’s a summary of the key aspects of the review:

Purpose and Scope:

  • Occasion: Celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Indian Republic.
  • Scope: Expanded to include an international aspect, inviting warships from various countries.
  • Theme: “Bridges of Friendship” to foster international maritime relationships.

Event Details:

  • Review: The President of India, as the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, conducted the review, marking it as the 8th fleet review of the Indian Navy.
  • Arrangement: Ships and submarines were anchored in the harbor in static columns. The Presidential Yacht sailed past these anchored ships, and a mobile column of ships sailed past the yacht.

Stamp Commemorations:

  1. Potsherd Painting of Mohenjodaro Boat: Featured on one stamp, reflecting the ancient maritime history of India.
  2. Maratha Ships:
    • Pal: A three-masted fighter ship with guns on the broadsides, depicted from the 18th-century paintings of Maratha ships.
    • Galbat: Another type of Maratha ship shown in historical paintings.
  3. Tarangini: A modern sail training ship of the Indian Navy, also featured in the stamps.

First Day Cover and Cancellation:

  • First Day Cover: Symbolically represented the wide participation of ships in the review.
  • Cancellation: Featured the crest of the Indian Navy with the motto “Shan-no-Varuna” meaning “May the Ocean God-Varuna-be auspicious unto us.”
