The Institution of Engineers (India) has a rich history dating back to its conception in Calcutta in 1919. Founded on September 13, 1920, and formally inaugurated on February 23, 1921, the Institution’s primary objective is the advancement of engineering science in India. It achieves this by facilitating the exchange of expertise among its members and upholding high standards in the engineering profession.
An important milestone in the Institution’s journey came on September 9, 1935, when it received a Royal Charter, making it the first body in India to receive such recognition. With 61 centers spread across the country, the Institution conducts various technical activities aimed at disseminating engineering knowledge. These activities include regional and national seminars, symposia, workshops, technical lectures, and more.
The Institution also publishes journals covering various aspects of engineering, including research papers on the latest breakthroughs. Its membership, which has surpassed 100,000, includes three main categories. Corporate Members hold the title of Chartered Engineer (India).
Additionally, the Institution conducts two examinations semi-annually: the Studentship Examination and the Institution Examination in Sections A and B. Passing these sections is recognized by the Government of India as equivalent to passing an engineering degree examination.
The Institution plays an active role in various international engineering forums, including being a founder member of the Conference of Engineering Institutions of the British Commonwealth. It also represents India in organizations such as the World Petroleum Congress, the Federation Internationale de la Precontrainte, the International Federation for Automatic Control, and the World Federation of Engineering Organizations.
Furthermore, the Indian Standards Institution traces its roots back to the Institution of Engineers (India), highlighting its significant impact on the engineering landscape in India.
In recognition of its contributions, the Indian Posts and Telegraphs Department is pleased to commemorate the Institution of Engineers (India) by issuing a special postage stamp.
