The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) marks its centenary on May 17, 1965, a milestone in the history of international collaboration and advancement in telecommunications. Established a century ago with the founding of the International Telegraph Union in Paris, the ITU has played a pivotal role in promoting the development, efficiency, and unity of telecommunication services worldwide.
Throughout its history, the ITU has fostered harmonious collaboration among member countries, with the exception of interruptions during the two world wars. Its objectives include promoting telecommunication development through international cooperation, ensuring rational use of telecommunications, enlarging technical facilities, improving efficiency, formulating regulations for telegraph, telephone, and radio procedures and tariffs, disseminating information, and implementing the terms of International Conventions.
The ITU’s organizational structure comprises various bodies, including the Plenipotentiary Conference, Administrative Conferences, Administrative Council, General Secretariat, International Frequency Registration Board, International Telegraph and Telephone Consultative Committee, and International Radio Consultative Committee. These bodies work together to oversee the management, regulation, and coordination of telecommunication activities on a global scale.
India, a member of the Union since 1869, has actively contributed to the ITU’s initiatives for the past ninety-six years. Particularly since independence, India has played a significant role as an elected member of the Administrative Council and participated in various technical study groups.
As the world looks towards the future of telecommunications, the ITU remains a vital facilitator in connecting nations through international telecommunication networks. India, recognizing the importance of international cooperation in this field, celebrates the ITU’s centenary as a symbol of progress and collaboration. The commemorative stamp issued by the Indian Posts and Telegraphs Department on May 17, 1965, honors the ITU’s century-long legacy of advancing global telecommunication.
