Nalanda College

Nalanda College, located in Biharsharif, Bihar, holds the distinction of being the oldest college affiliated with Magadh University. Its origins trace back to the establishment of the Bihar English High School a century ago, with the first batch of students appearing for examinations in 1871 under the Calcutta University.

The transformation of the school into a college was made possible by the generous donation of Rai Bahadur Edal Singh, the founder, who contributed zamindari property worth Rs. Two and a half lakhs along with an annual income of Rs. 12,000. In 1920, the institution was inaugurated as Nalanda College by the then Lt. Governor of Bihar.

Over the years, Nalanda College evolved from a school-cum-intermediate college to a degree college, offering courses in both arts and science. With approximately 2,000 students enrolled, the college provides education up to the Honours standard in various subjects.

Recognizing the significance of Nalanda College, the Government of Bihar decided to make it a constituent unit of Magadh University from April 1, 1970. The college has been receiving full deficit aid from the government since 1926, allowing it to develop facilities such as a well-equipped library and an auditorium-cum-recreation hall.

With two hostels within the campus and one outside, Nalanda College has been dedicated to serving the cause of higher education in Bihar State. Alumni of the college have gone on to hold prominent positions in public life, contributing to the state’s development.

As Nalanda College celebrates its centenary week in March 1970, the University Grants Commission has sanctioned funds for the construction of a Centenary Block. In recognition of this milestone, the Posts and Telegraphs Department is issuing a special postage stamp to commemorate the event, acknowledging the college’s invaluable service to higher education.
