Kaji Nemu – The Fragrant Lemon of Assam
The Kaji Nemu, also known as the Assam Lemon, is a proud recipient of the Geographical Indication (GI) tag. This recognition safeguards its authenticity and highlights its cultural and economic importance in the northeastern state of Assam.
Origin and Uniqueness
The Kaji Nemu is believed to have originated as a chance seedling raised at the citrus station in Bumihut, from the progeny of a variety collected under the name China-kaghi from Hashara village in Sivasagar district, Assam. Over time, this lemon has become synonymous with Assamese identity and cuisine.
Distinctive Features
Unlike regular lemons, the Kaji Nemu is:
- Larger in size and distinctly elongated
- Noted for its intense fragrance and strong flavor
- Unique in that it does not fall from the tree even after ripening, allowing for longer harvesting periods
These qualities make it superior in culinary, industrial, and medicinal applications.
Culinary and Medicinal Value
Kaji Nemu plays a central role in Assamese culture and gastronomy:
- Widely used to flavor traditional Assamese dishes
- A staple in refreshing beverages and pickles
- Valued for its medicinal benefits, including aiding digestion, providing Vitamin C, and boosting immunity
The fresh, tangy aroma and juice of Kaji Nemu make it a household favorite across Assam and beyond.
Economic Importance
The fruit is not only a part of local households but also a commercially important citrus variety. Its demand extends to industries that use it in juices, food products, essential oils, and herbal remedies, contributing to the rural economy of Assam.
Symbol of Assam’s Heritage
Kaji Nemu is more than just a lemon—it is a symbol of Assamese culture, hospitality, and tradition. Its GI recognition has given it a platform to reach international markets while ensuring protection for local farmers.
A Philatelic Tribute
To honor this unique fruit, the Department of Posts issued a commemorative postage stamp on Kaji Nemu, celebrating Assam’s rich agricultural heritage. The stamp highlights the importance of protecting indigenous varieties that carry the identity and pride of India’s diverse regions.
