A Genius Who Transformed the Modern World
Early Life and Background
Nikola Tesla was born in Smiljan, in 1856, in what was then part of the Austrian Empire. From an early age, he demonstrated an extraordinary fascination with science and the forces of nature. His brilliant mind and relentless curiosity would later make him one of the greatest inventors and visionaries of all time.
Scientific Achievements and Innovations
Tesla’s contributions to the world of electrical engineering, telecommunications, robotics, and physics are unparalleled. He held over 700 patents, and his inventions laid the foundation for much of today’s modern technology. Among his most significant creations were the polyphase system for rotating magnetic fields, the asynchronous motor, the synchronous generator, and the high-voltage AC transformer.
His pioneering work in the transfer and modulation of radio signals, as well as his research into high-frequency currents and X-rays, pushed the boundaries of scientific discovery and paved the way for innovations that still power the world today.
Global Recognition
In 1960, the General Conference on Weights and Measures in Paris honoured Tesla’s legacy by naming the international unit of magnetic flux density as the “tesla (T)” — making him the only Serbian scientist to have a unit of measurement bear his name.
Connection with India and Swami Vivekananda
During his stay in New York, Tesla met Swami Vivekananda, the great Indian spiritual leader, through the celebrated French actress Sarah Bernhardt. Their conversations revealed striking parallels between Vedic philosophy and modern scientific thought. Swami Vivekananda later wrote about recognizing elements of Vedantic science in Tesla’s work — a meeting that symbolized the unity of spiritual wisdom and scientific inquiry.
Commemorative Stamp
The joint issue of a commemorative stamp by India and Serbia featuring Nikola Tesla pays tribute to this extraordinary inventor. The stamp symbolizes the connection between his scientific genius and the divine inspiration behind all knowledge, celebrating a man whose ideas continue to illuminate the modern world.
