The Parliament House building, commissioned in 1927 and nearly a century old, stands as a Heritage Grade-I building. Inspired by the Chausath Yogini Temple in Morena, Madhya Pradesh, its architecture blends Indian tradition with European classicism. While reflecting elements like chhajjas, chhatris, and jaalis, it also incorporates European features such as teak wood panelling with British Dominions’ coats of arms.
Adjacent to this historic structure, the New Building in Parliament Complex symbolizes modernization and addresses the challenges faced by the present Parliament building. Designed to accommodate the evolving needs of efficient parliamentary functioning, it features larger halls for the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, integrating modern technology and safety standards while respecting the local architectural context.
With a focus on sustainability and energy efficiency, the new building achieves the highest safety standards, including earthquake-proofing. It houses state-of-the-art facilities such as committee rooms, lounges, dining areas, and a Constitution Hall, designed to be Divyang-friendly and equipped with the latest communications technology to enhance the experience for Members of Parliament.
Drawing inspiration from India’s rich heritage, the building’s design incorporates motifs and symbols reflecting the nation’s cultural diversity. The Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha chambers feature themes based on the peacock and lotus, respectively, while the open-sky courtyard hosts a banyan tree, symbolizing knowledge and longevity. Hand-woven carpets, stone carvings, and jali designs showcase the unity in diversity of India.
As part of an integrated Legislative Enclave along with the Parliament Library and Annexe, the new building reflects the aspirations of 21st-century India and embodies the spirit of ‘Atma Nirbhar Bharat’. The Department of Posts is honored to issue a Commemorative Postage Stamp on the Parliament Complex, celebrating its role in shaping the hopes and aspirations of New India.
