Early Life and Background
Prithviraj Kapoor was born in Lyallpur and developed an early passion for the performing arts. He later moved to Bombay, where he became one of the first pillars of the emerging Indian film and theatre industry.
Contribution to Indian Theatre and Cinema
A pioneering figure, Prithviraj Kapoor is widely regarded as one of the founding architects of modern Indian theatre and Hindi cinema. He starred in several iconic films during the early era of Indian cinema, including Alam Ara (1931), India’s first talkie.
In 1944, he established Prithvi Theatres, a travelling theatre company that played an instrumental role in promoting social awareness and strengthening the cultural fabric of the nation through stage performances. His legacy continued through the celebrated Kapoor family, which became synonymous with Indian film heritage.
Awards and Recognition
Prithviraj Kapoor received the Padma Bhushan in 1969 for his distinguished contribution to the arts. In 1972, he was honoured with the Dada Saheb Phalke Award, India’s highest recognition in cinema, acknowledging his lifelong dedication to theatre and film.
