Raj Bhavan Uttar Pradesh, located in the heart of Lucknow, is a historic and magnificent building that serves as the official residence of the Governor of Uttar Pradesh. Built in 1798 by the French architect Claude Martin, it was originally named “Kothi Hayat Baksh” (Abode of gift of life). Initially, it served as the residence of the British Governors of the United Provinces and later became the residence of the Governor of Uttar Pradesh after India’s Independence in 1947.
This double-storey building boasts high verandas, lofty ceilings, and abundant greenery in its surroundings. The main building features large airy porticos, meeting halls, and guest accommodations. The Gandhi Sabhagaar within Raj Bhavan is adorned with beautiful flower decorations on its side walls and ceiling, along with traditional golden color paintings. Additionally, it houses a selective collection of sculptures and monuments of great legends in its Kala kaksh.
Raj Bhavan Uttar Pradesh showcases a unique Indo-European architecture that reflects the rich cultural heritage and grand history of Uttar Pradesh. Its construction is a testament to the skill and craftsmanship of the architects and artisans involved. The building is renowned for its iconic features, including grand walls adorned with beautiful carvings and integrated designs. Its sprawling 52-acre campus adds to its beauty, featuring colorful gardens, cool fountains, beautiful trees, fitness areas for children, and chirping birds.
Over its 225-year history, Raj Bhavan Uttar Pradesh has silently witnessed the ups and downs of Awadh. It played a significant role in the Indian freedom struggle by providing a platform for political dialogue and protest, serving as a symbol of British colonial power challenged by the Indian people’s quest. Many important political and administrative decisions have been made within its walls over the years.
