India’s Icon of Buddhist Heritage
Historical Significance
The Sanchi Stupa, located in Sanchi town, Madhya Pradesh, is one of India’s most important Buddhist monuments and the oldest stone structure in the country. Commissioned in the 3rd century B.C. by Emperor Ashoka, the Stupa was built to enshrine the relics of Lord Buddha, serving as a focal point of devotion and pilgrimage. Over the centuries, it has stood as a symbol of India’s rich spiritual and architectural heritage.
Architectural Marvel
The present hemispherical Stupa is nearly double the diameter of Ashoka’s original brick structure, featuring a central chamber for the relics and a stone chatra (umbrella-like structure) that symbolizes the Wheel of Law (Dharma). The Stupa is surrounded by a balustrade and adorned with four magnificent ornamental gateways, added in the 1st century B.C., each intricately carved with mythological and religious motifs.
A sandstone pillar, inscribed with Ashoka’s Edicts and Brahmi script (Shankhalipi) from the Gupta period, stands on the site, while three superimposed umbrella-like structures crown the dome. The Stupa’s drum and staircase enable devotees to circumambulate the sacred structure, preserving centuries-old spiritual practices. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1989, Sanchi Stupa remains one of the best-preserved ancient stupas in India.
Commemorative Stamp
To celebrate its historical and cultural significance, the Department of Posts issued a commemorative postage stamp featuring Sanchi Stupa as part of the India–Viet Nam joint issue themed “Ancient Architecture” in 2017. The stamp honors the architectural grandeur and spiritual legacy of this iconic monument, highlighting India’s contribution to Buddhist heritage and promoting awareness of cultural landmarks through philately.
Cultural Legacy
Sanchi Stupa is not only a tourist attraction but also a living testament to India’s Buddhist heritage, artistry, and devotion. Each intricate carving, gateway, and structural detail narrates stories of faith, royal patronage, and centuries of architectural brilliance. Through the commemorative stamp, collectors and enthusiasts can celebrate this timeless treasure, exploring its historical, spiritual, and aesthetic significance.
