Sant Ravidas, born in humble circumstances in Varanasi in the 15th century, emerged as a revered saint and reformer. His parents, deeply moved by his divine aura at birth, named him after the radiant sun-gold. Despite lacking formal education, Ravidas displayed an innate inclination towards spiritual pursuits from a young age, emphasizing the path of salvation through love of God and devotional worship.

Although trained in the profession of tanning and shoe-making, Ravidas led a simple life, content with making just one pair of shoes a day and often providing them free to the needy. His earnings were frequently spent on helping the poor and feeding sadhus. His devotion to God and compassion for the less fortunate defined his existence.

Ravidas challenged societal norms, rejecting idol worship and emphasizing the search for truth and the realization of the oneness of God. His teachings centered on self-recognition leading to the recognition of the Almighty. Despite facing discrimination from orthodox Hindu society due to his caste, Ravidas remained steadfast in his beliefs.

Legends abound of Ravidas’s miracles and divine encounters, including his confrontation with Raja Naga Mal and his demonstration of spiritual prowess at the Panch Ganga Ghat in Varanasi. His teachings, captured in numerous shabdas, emphasized the chanting of the divine name and surrender to the Lord as the path to salvation.

Sant Ravidas’s legacy as a reformer and proponent of religious harmony transcends caste and creed. He preached the equality of all in the eyes of God and advocated love and devotion as the universal remedy for humanity’s challenges. Despite opposition from orthodox society, he remained unwavering in his commitment to truth and the love of God.

The Posts and Telegraphs Department honors the memory of Sant Ravidas, a great saint and reformer, by issuing a special commemorative stamp in recognition of his enduring contribution to spirituality and social harmony.
