The Olympics originated in ancient Greece, named after the venue, Olympia, a Greek settlement. The first recorded Olympics occurred in 776 B.C. but were halted in 394 A.D. by Roman Emperor Theodosius. After more than 1500 years, the Games were revived in 1896 thanks to the efforts of French nobleman Baron Pierre de Coubertin. The Olympics now occur every four years in various major cities worldwide, although they were canceled three times in 1916, 1940, and 1944 due to the two world wars.

The XXI Olympic Games are scheduled for Montreal, Canada, from July 17 to August 1, 1976, with India participating in multiple events. India has a notable history in hockey, having dominated the sport for 32 years across six consecutive Olympic Games starting in 1928. The Olympic Games aim to promote international goodwill by fostering friendly competition among nations. India supports this ideal and participates to enhance international understanding in sports. In celebration of India’s participation in the 1976 Olympics, the Indian Posts & Telegraphs Department is issuing a series of four postage stamps on July 17, 1976.
