Overview:

  • Birth and Early Life: Shri Shri Thakur Anukul chandra was born into a Brahmin family on September 14, 1888, in Himaitpur of Pabna district, now in Bangladesh. His parents were Shri Shiva Chandra Chakraborty and Srimati Manomohini Devi. Regarded as a Yug Purushottama by his devotees, his life was seen as a divine manifestation, characterized by deep love, compassion, and personal magnetism.

Key Highlights:

  • Spiritual Insights and Practices: Shri Shri Thakur frequently experienced bhav-samadhi or spiritual trance and had a powerful insight into human and external nature. Although miracles were reported in the lives of his devotees, he did not perform any. He advocated total involvement of the self in the service of the Guru and constant practice of the mantra imparted by the Guru for success in life. Discipline, in his view, was the voluntary regulation of one’s thoughts, speech, and actions in accordance with the Guru’s wishes.
  • Transformation and Approach to Life: His all-fulfilling love transformed the lives of many anti-social elements. He brought the sublime into daily life, approaching life’s problems in a balanced, dynamic, rationalistic, and scientific way. A qualified physician from the National Medical School of Calcutta, he believed that “Death was a curable disease” and imbued his message with the eternal principle of “Being and Becoming.”

Significance:

  • Interests and Contributions: His interests ranged from education to herbal medicine, science to philosophy, literature to politics. • Ashram Development: His ashram developed into a sprawling complex, blending the spiritual and material worlds. It housed a science laboratory, an academic institute, a charitable hospital, a printing and publishing unit, a community kitchen, and an administrative block. After moving to Deoghar (Bihar) on September 2, 1946, a similar network of institutions developed there.
