Spiritual Saint and Messenger of Universal Peace
Sri Siddhar Swamigal was a revered spiritual leader and social reformer who carried forward India’s ancient tradition of spirituality and service to humanity. In a civilization where the pursuit of material progress has always been accompanied by spiritual wisdom, saints like Siddhar Swamigal helped guide society toward peace, compassion, and enlightenment.
Early Life and Background
Sri Siddhar Swamigal was born on 15 May 1904 in Srinivasanallur, a small village near Kumbakonam, in the Thanjavur District (formerly Tanjore). His parents, Rathnaswamy and Dhana Lakshmi Ammal, belonged to a family of Siddhars, known for their mastery of Upanishads and Vedic scriptures.
The family was also well known for its knowledge of traditional medicinal herbs and plants, and they practiced healing as physicians. At the age of eight, Siddhar Swamigal was initiated by his spiritual guru Sri Sivananda Sivalinga Perumanaar, who bestowed upon him the sacred Brahma Deeksha. Under his guidance, Siddhar Swamigal studied extensively and mastered the teachings of the Eighteen Siddhars of Tamil Nadu.
Though married at a young age and blessed with a son and daughter, he continued to pursue a life of deep spiritual reflection, influenced greatly by the discipline of his grandfather and the scholarship of his father.
Spiritual Awakening
On 19 May 1944, Siddhar Swamigal experienced a profound spiritual realization while meditating. This transformative moment inspired him to dedicate his life completely to spiritual guidance and social service.
Over time, he attracted many followers who admired his teachings and compassionate nature. He encouraged his devotees to face life’s challenges with courage and sincerity while cultivating universal love, peace, and devotion to the Guru (Guru Bhakti).
He spent more than two decades in Mayiladuthurai, a town in Thanjavur district, and therefore came to be widely known as Mayiladuthurai Siddhar Swamigal.
Teachings and Philosophy
Sri Siddhar Swamigal’s teachings emphasized peace, harmony, and spiritual awakening. During a time when society was divided by caste, creed, and social barriers, he promoted the message of unity and brotherhood.
One of his notable contributions was the concept of Open Space Meditation, which he described as a spiritual practice that helps individuals:
- Overcome personal limitations
- Break mental barriers
- Draw strength from the vast openness of space
He strongly believed that world peace begins with inner peace. According to him, individuals must first cultivate harmony within themselves before society and the world can achieve lasting peace. His teachings encouraged people to transcend narrow social divisions and develop a universal consciousness rooted in spiritual awareness.
Founding of Omkara Ashram
To spread the message of divine bliss or “Santhosham”, Sri Siddhar Swamigal founded the Omkara Ashram in 1960 at Mayiladuthurai. Before attaining spiritual liberation, he entrusted the leadership of the ashram to his foremost disciple Swamy Omkarananda.
Sri Siddhar Swamigal passed away on 31 August 1964, leaving behind a rich legacy of spiritual wisdom and humanitarian service.
Social Service and Global Outreach
The Omkara Ashram continues to function as a non-religious spiritual organization dedicated to promoting peace, harmony, and social welfare. Its activities include:
- Organizing World Peace Conferences and mass rallies
- Providing food and support to the poor
- Supporting the education and welfare of destitute girls
- Offering shelter and medical care for the needy
The ashram has branches across South India, with Puducherry serving as the hub of its spiritual activities. Its message has also reached parts of the Far East and the United States.
