Tamil Emigration to Sri Lanka, Bicentenary

From their arrival in the 19th century to work in coffee, tea, and rubber plantations to their subsequent involvement in various economic activities, the Indian Origin Tamils played a pivotal role in shaping the landscape of Sri Lanka’s central highlands.

The account poignantly illustrates the hardships endured by the Indian Origin Tamils during British colonial rule, including exploitative labor conditions and statelessness following the passage of the Ceylon Citizenship Act of 1948. Despite facing systemic marginalization and neglect, the community persisted in its struggle for representation and citizenship rights, as evidenced by the Satyagraha campaign of 1952 led by prominent leaders such as Soumyamoorthy Thondaman.
