Vishwanath Kashinath Rajwade was one of the pioneering historians of India. A multifaceted scholar, he made notable contributions not only to history but also to disciplines such as linguistics, literature, geography, oleography and sociology. His research and writings significantly influenced the study and interpretation of Indian history.
Early Life and Education
Rajwade was born in the Raigad District of Maharashtra. After completing his education in Pune, he took up the teaching profession and settled there. A tragic turning point in his life came in 1894 with the untimely death of his wife. Despite suggestions from many to remarry, Rajwade chose instead to dedicate his life to the pursuit of knowledge and service to the nation.
Contribution to Historiography
Meticulous in research and highly productive in writing, Rajwade worked on a wide range of subjects. However, he is best remembered for his groundbreaking contributions to historiography. At a time when historical discourse in India was dominated by European historians, Rajwade’s writings inspired scholars in Maharashtra and across India to explore history from an Indian perspective.
He revolutionised the understanding of history by promoting the view that history should encompass the complete spectrum of human activity in society, rather than being confined only to political events.
Institutional Contributions
In 1910, Rajwade founded the Bharat Itihas Sanshodhak Mandal in Pune. Through this institution, he formalised and promoted systematic historical research in India.
Innovative Research Methodology
Rajwade introduced new approaches to historical research by emphasising the importance of both written and non-written sources. He encouraged the study of objects such as costumes, household items, buildings and works of art alongside traditional archival materials like letters and manuscripts.
He also highlighted the significance of folk literature and oral traditions as valuable historical sources—an idea that was far ahead of its time. His research methodology focused on five key stages:
- Collection of original historical records
- Preservation of records
- Examination and classification of records
- Editing and publication of records
- Interpretation of sources and writing of history
Commemoration
In recognition of his immense contribution to historical research and scholarship, India Post issued a commemorative postage stamp in honour of Vishwanath Kashinath Rajwade.
Legacy
Through his pioneering ideas and dedication to research, V. K. Rajwade transformed the study of history in India. His work laid the foundation for modern historical research in the country and continues to inspire generations of historians and scholars.
