Botanical Name: Rhododendron arboreum
Family: Ericaceae
The Rhododendron is one of the most iconic and admired wildflowers of the Himalayan region, celebrated for its vibrant blossoms and striking presence. Native to the Himalayas, it is found from Eastern Nepal to Arunachal Pradesh, flourishing in forests and on rocky hillsides at elevations of 2,700–3,700 metres.
This evergreen shrub is known for its distinctive pink, bell-shaped flowers, which appear in clusters and lend a dramatic splash of colour to the rugged mountain terrain. Its leaves, reaching up to 11 cm in length, are smooth green above and white or fawn beneath, adding to the plant’s ornamental appeal.
Flowering from March to June, the Rhododendron heralds the arrival of spring in the highlands. Beyond its visual charm, it holds cultural significance in many Himalayan communities, where it is cherished for its beauty and seasonal symbolism.
By showcasing the Rhododendron, India Post highlights the splendour of India’s floral heritage and reiterates the importance of preserving the country’s diverse and fragile mountain ecosystems.
