Devotee, Poet and Preserver of Tukaram’s Gatha

Santaji Jagnade was a revered saint, poet and devoted disciple of the Bhakti movement in Maharashtra. His life was marked by unwavering devotion, literary excellence and a profound commitment to preserving spiritual heritage.

Early Life

Santaji Jagnade Maharaj was born in 1625 at Chakan village in Khed tehsil of Pune district, Maharashtra, to a pious couple, Shri Vithobapant and Mathabai. His father was engaged in the traditional occupation of producing edible oil, and Santaji continued the ancestral profession in his early years.

As per the customs of the time, he was married at the age of twelve to Yamuna. However, even after marriage, Santaji gradually became detached from worldly pursuits and material life. He turned towards spirituality, participating in kirtans and bhajans, and eventually renounced domestic life in search of divine realization.

Association with Sant Tukaram

Santaji became a close spiritual companion and devoted disciple of Tukaram, one of the greatest saints of the Bhakti movement. In Tukaram Maharaj’s company, Santaji began composing and recording devotional verses (Abhangs).

During a period of religious opposition, orthodox elements destroyed Tukaram’s sacred “Gatha” by throwing its manuscripts into the Indrayani River. This act deeply pained Santaji. Determined to restore the lost treasure, he undertook the monumental task of reconstructing the Gatha from memory.

Santaji travelled across Maharashtra, visiting villages and gathering verses remembered by Tukaram’s disciples and followers. As the original scribe of Tukaram’s Gatha, he was able to recall and compile a significant portion from memory. Through tireless dedication, he recreated the sacred text, giving it a rebirth and restoring it to the spiritual life of the masses.

Literary Contributions

Santaji’s poetic brilliance is reflected in works such as:

  • Shankar Deepika
  • Yogachi Wat
  • Nirgunachya Lavnya
  • Tel Sindhu

His Abhangs remain cherished for their devotion, philosophical depth and literary richness.

Teachings and Philosophy

Santaji Jagnade’s teachings echoed the universal values of love, humility and compassion. His core messages included:

  1. Avoid unhealthy competition
  2. Never discriminate between individuals
  3. Shun ego, jealousy and pride
  4. Act for the welfare of humanity
  5. Give priority to public good
  6. Earn wealth through righteous means and use it generously
  7. Practice compassion and never despise others

His philosophy closely aligned with that of Sant Tukaram, emphasizing equality, devotion and moral integrity.

Enduring Legacy

Santaji Jagnade Maharaj remains an immortal figure in Maharashtra’s spiritual tradition. His efforts in preserving Tukaram’s Gatha ensured that one of the greatest devotional works of India survived for future generations.

At a time when the world faces moral and spiritual challenges, his teachings on compassion, equality and universal love continue to inspire.

In recognition of his invaluable contribution to devotional literature and spiritual life, India Post issued a commemorative postage stamp honoring Sant Santaji Jagnade Maharaj.
