Themes

The vision of establishing a premier engineering institution in Gwalior was first conceived by Madhav Rao Scindia I during his visit to Europe in 1925. He envisioned an institution that would greatly benefit the youth of the region by imparting quality technical education. However, his untimely demise in the same year delayed the realization of this dream.

Thirty-two years later, in 1957, the prestigious institute—then known as Madhav Engineering College—was established by Jiwajirao Scindia in the state of Madhya Pradesh. The institution was founded with the objective of providing undergraduate and postgraduate technical education, promoting research, and producing skilled technical manpower for the progress of the state and the nation.

Early Years and Foundation

In its initial phase, the Institute functioned from the Residency Palace in Gwalior, a building presently used by the Indian Air Force as the Residency Officers’ Mess. At that time, the Institute did not have its own campus building.

The foundation stone of the present building was laid by Rajendra Prasad, the first President of India, on 20 October 1956. The completed building was inaugurated on 11 December 1964 by Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, then President of India.

Academic Growth and Expansion

The Institute began with B.E. courses in Civil, Mechanical, and Electrical Engineering with an intake of 120 students. In 1967, it introduced postgraduate and Ph.D. programmes in Applied Sciences.

Over the decades, the Institute expanded steadily:

  • B.E. in Electronics Engineering (1981)
  • Undergraduate course in Architecture (1984)
  • M.E. in Civil Engineering (Construction Technology & Management) in 1987—among the first of its kind in India
  • Postgraduate courses in Electronics and Electrical Engineering (1995)
  • B.E. in Computer Science (1994) and Chemical Engineering (1995)
  • Information Technology and Biotechnology (2000)
  • M.C.A. programme (1996), initiated under the leadership of Madhavrao Scindia to meet the emerging demands of the computer revolution

Further additions included postgraduate specializations in Production Technology, Microwave Engineering, Biotechnology, and Urban Development in Architecture. The Institute also offers Ph.D. programmes in multiple disciplines including Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics, Computer Science & Engineering, Information Technology, and Applied Sciences.
