Themes

The late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries were marked by profound socio-political transformation in India. It was a period that witnessed the rise of bold new ideas, fearless questioning of outdated social norms, and a growing commitment to the upliftment of marginalized communities. Among the prominent leaders who embodied this spirit of reform was Pitti Theagaraya Chetty, widely known as Sir Pitti Theagarayar.

Early Life and Education

Born on 27 April 1852 at Egathur near Chennai, Theagarayar graduated with a B.A. degree in 1873 from Presidency College, Madras. His early interests lay in commerce and public affairs, and he soon dedicated himself to public service.

Public Service and Civic Leadership

Sir Pitti Theagarayar entered public life in 1882 as a Member of the Madras Municipal Corporation, serving the civic body for an extraordinary 40 years. He was elected Chairman of the Chennai Municipality in 1920 and held office until 1923. His tenure was marked by administrative integrity and a strong commitment to public welfare.

A champion of indigenous enterprise, he actively promoted handloom weaving and cottage industries, advocating improved techniques and government support to strengthen traditional livelihoods. His contributions to commerce also led to the establishment of the South Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, where he served as Chairman from 1910 to 1921.

Political Contributions and the Justice Party

Elected to the Madras Legislative Council in 1910, Theagarayar’s political journey entered a new phase. He strongly opposed caste monopolies in public administration and worked toward liberalizing the political process. To advance these ideals, he founded the Justice Party, which achieved a decisive majority in the 1920 Legislative Council elections.

Although invited by Lord Wellington, the then Governor, to assume a responsible position in the new Ministry, Theagarayar declined the offer—an act that reflected his principled approach to public life.

Honours and Legacy

In recognition of his dedicated public service, he was conferred the title of “Rao Bahadur” in 1909, “Diwan Bahadur” in 1919, and was knighted with the title “Sir” in 1921.

Sir Pitti Theagarayar passed away on 30 June 1925 at the age of 73. His legacy of selfless, courageous, and honourable service continues to inspire generations. The bustling locality of T. Nagar (Theagaraya Nagar) in Chennai stands as a lasting tribute to his memory.

Commemorative Postage Stamp

In recognition of his pioneering role in social reform, civic administration, and political transformation in South India, India Post has issued a commemorative postage stamp on Pitti Theagaraya Chetty, honouring his enduring contribution to public life and social justice.
