Food safety has emerged as a major global concern, with growing awareness about the need to ensure safe and high-quality food for consumers. The concept of food safety and quality encompasses the entire food supply chain—from farmers and processors to retailers and consumers. Ensuring safe food is a shared responsibility requiring coordinated efforts among all stakeholders.
Recognizing the urgency of strengthening food safety systems and spreading awareness among the masses, the Ministry of Food Processing Industries (MoFPI), Government of India, observed the year 2008–09 as “Food Safety & Quality Year” with the approval of the Union Council of Ministers.
Importance of Food Safety
Food safety begins at the farm and continues through processing, storage, distribution, and preparation until the food reaches the consumer’s plate. A critical link in this chain is the kitchen—whether domestic, commercial, or institutional—where hygienic handling and preparation are essential.
Key aspects requiring focused attention include:
- Personal hygiene of food handlers and use of protective clothing
- Safe drinking water and hygienic food preparation
- Hand washing before and after handling food
- Use of certified products such as those bearing Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) and AGMARK certification
- Microbiological safety of prepared foods
- Regular food testing and analysis
- Hygienic maintenance of kitchens and pest control
- Proper waste disposal systems
Improving food safety and quality is a continuous process that demands constant vigilance, training, and capacity building among personnel involved in managing, handling, storing, producing, and distributing food.
Role of the Food Processing Industry
The food processing industry plays a vital role in India’s economic development. It generates employment, encourages investment and exports, and builds strong linkages between agriculture and industry. By connecting farming with food retailing, food services, and export trade, the sector strengthens two key pillars of the Indian economy—agriculture and industry.
In domestic and global markets, food safety and quality have become critical requirements. Safe food is particularly important for exports in an increasingly competitive global environment. Governments worldwide are intensifying efforts in research and development to respond to rising consumer concerns and food safety challenges. Evolving trends in global food production, processing, distribution, and preparation have created an increasing demand for scientific research to ensure a safer global food supply.
World Food Day and Public Awareness
To raise awareness about global food issues and strengthen solidarity in the fight against hunger, malnutrition, and poverty, 16 October is celebrated every year as World Food Day. In 2008, the Ministry observed 16 October as “Food Safety & Quality Day” and released a commemorative postal stamp and First Day Cover during the 2nd International Food Regulatory Summit, 2008, held in Noida.
Commemorative Postage Stamp
To mark the observance of “Food Safety & Quality Year 2008–2009” and to promote nationwide awareness on the importance of safe and quality food, the Department of Posts issued a commemorative postage stamp, reinforcing the message that safe food is essential for public health, economic growth, and sustainable development.
