Swami Shraddhanand, also known as Mahatma Munshi Ram, emerged as a stalwart figure in India’s struggle for independence and social reform during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Born in 1856 in Talwan (Jullundur) into a respected Khatri family, Swami Shraddhanand initially pursued a career in law but was drawn to the call of serving the Arya Samaj under Swami Dayanand Saraswati.
He founded the Gurukul at Kangri in Hardwar, a renowned seat of learning inspired by Vedic ideals, aimed at nurturing disciplined citizens with a national outlook. Notable figures such as Ramsay Macdonald and Mahatma Gandhi acknowledged its significance. In 1917, he embraced Sanyas, adopting the name ‘Shraddhanand’, and shifted his base to Delhi, where he established various institutions for social and cultural upliftment.
Swami Shraddhanand played a pivotal role in the national freedom movement, actively participating in protests against oppressive British laws like the Rowlatt Act. His fearlessness was exemplified when he dared a soldier to shoot him during a protest march led by Gandhiji. He worked tirelessly for Hindu-Muslim unity and earned the respect of people from all communities.
Tragically, Swami Shraddhanand met a martyr’s end in 1926 when he was assassinated by a misguided assailant while still on his sickbed. His dying message emphasized the importance of Hindu-Muslim unity for India’s salvation. Mahatma Gandhi hailed him as a hero both in life and death, recognizing his unwavering commitment to social justice and national unity.
The Posts and Telegraphs Department honors Swami Shraddhanand’s legacy by issuing a special commemorative stamp, paying tribute to his noble soul, fearless patriotism, and invaluable contributions to the nation.
