Celebrating a Legacy of Service, Leadership, and Nation-Building
The Bharat Scouts and Guides (BSG) has been a cornerstone of youth development in India, nurturing responsible citizens through a strong tradition of non-formal education. Its holistic programme—encompassing physical, mental, social, emotional, and spiritual development—has empowered young people to become proactive, compassionate, and constructive members of society.
Early Beginnings and Unification
Scouting in India began in 1909, inspired by the global movement founded by Lord Baden-Powell. After India’s independence, efforts were made to bring together the various Scouting and Guiding organisations that existed across the country.
In 1950, under the guidance of the Government of India, several groups—including the Boy Scouts of India, the Hindustan Scouts and Guides, and the Seva Samiti—merged to form the Bharat Scouts and Guides. This historic unification marked the beginning of a new era dedicated to strengthening youth development nationwide.
Seven Decades of Youth Empowerment
Over the past 75 years, the Bharat Scouts and Guides has shaped the lives of millions of young people. Through its value-driven programmes, it has played a vital role in:
- Leadership development
- Character building
- Discipline and responsibility
- Community service and social welfare
- Environmental stewardship
- Promotion of national unity and pride
Recognised by the Ministry of Youth Affairs, Government of India, BSG is the apex national body for Scouting and Guiding, committed to nurturing youth who uphold integrity, service, and a spirit of cooperation.
A Lasting Impact on Nation-Building
From disaster relief and social service projects to rural development, health awareness, and literacy campaigns, the organisation has consistently contributed to the nation’s progress. Its programmes encourage young people to serve society with compassion, courage, and patriotism.
As BSG celebrates its Diamond Jubilee in 2025, it reflects not only on its remarkable legacy but also on its continued relevance in modern times. In a rapidly changing world, the organisation remains steadfast in its mission to prepare youth to face future challenges with resilience, critical thinking, and a strong ethical foundation.
Commemorative Postage Stamp
The Department of Posts proudly releases a commemorative postage stamp honouring 75 years of the Bharat Scouts and Guides. This special issue celebrates the organisation’s enduring commitment to youth empowerment and nation-building. It also serves to raise awareness about the values of Scouting and Guiding, inspiring new generations to participate in this meaningful movement.
