150 Years of Sporting and Cultural Excellence
A Legacy Since 1875
Established on 19 June 1875, Bombay Gymkhana stands among India’s oldest and most prestigious private members’ clubs. Over the last 150 years, it has been a silent witness to the transformation of Mumbai, evolving from an exclusive colonial-era institution into a vibrant centre of sporting and social life, while steadfastly preserving its timeless heritage.
Architectural Heritage and Timeless Charm
The Bombay Gymkhana heritage building is an architectural landmark that reflects classic colonial aesthetics. Centred around a gracious veranda, the structure features high ceilings, Burma teak wood beams, wide verandas, and ornate ironwork. While modern facilities have been thoughtfully introduced to meet contemporary needs, great care has been taken to preserve the building’s historic character, ensuring that its old-world charm remains undiminished.
A Landmark in Indian Cricket History
Bombay Gymkhana occupies a special place in India’s cricketing legacy. In December 1933, it hosted India’s first-ever Test match on home soil, played against England. This historic encounter gained immortal significance when Lala Amarnath scored India’s first Test century, a moment that filled the nation with pride. The enthusiastic crowds that gathered for the match reflected India’s deepening love for cricket and cemented Bombay Gymkhana’s status as a cornerstone of the sport’s history in the country.
A Centre for Multi-Sport Excellence
The club offers a wide spectrum of world-class sporting facilities. Its historic cricket ground remains a centrepiece, while the football ground supports football, rugby, major tournaments, and previously hosted the iconic Aga Khan Hockey Tournament, recognised as the world’s second-oldest hockey event.
Racket sports thrive at the club with three refurbished badminton courts hosting state and national events, five squash courts that stage major tournaments, and five synthetic tennis courts, recently enhanced by the addition of a padel court. The club also boasts a swimming pool used for training, recreation, and galas, and a world-class billiards and snooker room that hosts All India tournaments and selection trials.
Reviving Traditions and Embracing New Sports
Bombay Gymkhana continues to honour tradition while embracing modern sporting trends. Polo, a historic association of the club, has seen a remarkable revival with the return of the 1882 Bombay Polo Challenge Cup and the recent Arena Polo Championship, both held on the football ground. Mahjong has also grown steadily in popularity, with regular sessions and successful internal and inter-club tournaments. A dedicated bridge room supports frequent play and competitive events, while a modern, fully equipped fitness centre caters to contemporary wellness needs.
A Living Symbol of Mumbai’s Sporting Spirit
Today, Bombay Gymkhana is more than a private sports club—it is a living symbol of sporting excellence, discipline, and camaraderie. Amid Mumbai’s rapid urbanisation and dynamic pace of life, the club remains an oasis of tradition and community. Its grounds have witnessed legendary matches, personal milestones, and countless stories of fellowship across generations.
Commemorative Issue
As Bombay Gymkhana enters the next chapter of its remarkable journey, it continues to uphold its founding ideals and nurture the spirit of sportsmanship and community.
The Department of Posts commemorates this historic milestone by issuing a Commemorative Postage Stamp on the occasion of 150 years of Bombay Gymkhana, celebrating its enduring contribution to India’s sporting and cultural heritage.
