Guduchi (Tinospora cordifolia (Willd.) Miers ex Hook.f. & Thoms.), also known as Giloy, is one of the most revered medicinal plants in India’s traditional systems of medicine. It is a large, perennial woody climber with extensively spreading growth and succulent stems, commonly found across tropical regions of the country. Among its various parts, the stem is especially valued for its wide range of therapeutic applications.

In traditional healing practices, Guduchi is known for its powerful immunity-enhancing and rejuvenating properties. The stem is widely used in the treatment of fever, cough, gout, worm infestation, anemia and skin diseases. Its ability to support the body’s natural defence mechanisms has earned it the reputation of being a “nectar of life” in Ayurveda. Guduchi is also considered beneficial in restoring balance and vitality, making it an integral component of many classical formulations.

Guduchi reflects the richness of India’s botanical heritage, where medicinal plants form the foundation of age-old healthcare traditions. For a large section of the population, especially in rural areas, such plant-based remedies continue to offer safe, accessible and effective healthcare solutions.

With increasing global awareness of holistic wellness and natural medicines, Guduchi has gained prominence in the herbal, nutraceutical and pharmaceutical industries. Its growing demand has further strengthened India’s position as a leading supplier of medicinal plants to the world.

Commemorative Postage

Recognising its immense therapeutic value and its role in preserving India’s traditional knowledge systems, the Department of Posts proudly honours Guduchi through a Commemorative Postage Stamp, celebrating nature’s gift to health and well-being.
