A Century of Excellence in Security Printing

The India Security Press (ISP), established in 1925 in Nashik, is one of Asia’s oldest and most prestigious security printing institutions. It has played a vital role in strengthening India’s financial and administrative systems through secure document production.

Establishment and Early Development

The foundation of India Security Press was laid on September 25, 1924, following the recommendations of Lt. Col. G. W. Willis and F. D. Ascoli, who advocated domestic production of currency and security documents. Operations officially began in December 1925, marking a major step towards India’s self-reliance.

In 1928, the Currency Note Press (CNP) was established within the same premises to print currency notes for the nation.

Role in Security Printing

From its early years, India Security Press has been instrumental in producing a wide range of high-security materials, including:

  • Currency notes (until 1962 for Reserve Bank of India)
  • Postage stamps and postal stationery
  • Judicial and non-judicial stamps
  • Fiscal stamps and excise labels
  • Election materials and MICR cheques
  • Academic certificates

Its use of advanced printing technologies has helped ensure the production of counterfeit-resistant documents, contributing to a secure financial system.

Modernization and Technological Advancements

In 2006, ISP became part of the Security Printing and Minting Corporation of India Limited, a Government of India enterprise under the Ministry of Finance.

Today, India Security Press is responsible for printing:

  • Passports and travel documents
  • PIO and OCI cards
  • Visa and Apostille stickers

It also operates a state-of-the-art e-Passport manufacturing facility, showcasing India’s progress in secure and technology-driven documentation.

Innovation and Security Measures

ISP continues to evolve through innovation and advanced security features:

  • A Forgery Detection Cell, whose reports are legally admissible in court
  • A dedicated Design Studio for developing secure printing technologies
  • Continuous upgrades to prevent counterfeiting

It is also responsible for printing Definitive, Service, and many Commemorative Postage Stamps, reflecting India’s rich cultural and historical heritage.

Legacy and Recognition

For nearly a century, India Security Press has been a cornerstone of India’s national security and economic stability. Its contributions have supported governance, financial systems, and public administration.

To celebrate its 100 years of establishment (1925–2025), the Department of Posts released a commemorative postage stamp, honoring the enduring legacy of the India Security Press, Nashik.

Conclusion

The India Security Press stands as a symbol of trust, innovation, and national strength. Its continuous evolution and commitment to excellence ensure its vital role in safeguarding India’s future.
