Origins and Legacy

Founded in 1897 by HH Maharaja Madhavrao Scindia I as the Sardars’ School to educate the sons of Jagirdars and Chieftains, The Scindia School began as a centre for preparing administrators of tomorrow. In 1908, the School was relocated to the majestic Gwalior Fort, and under the visionary HH Maharaja Jiwajirao Scindia, it transformed into a modern public residential school. On July 1, 1933, it was renamed as The Scindia School and opened its doors to the wider public, marking a new chapter in inclusive education.

Pioneer in Modern Education

The Scindia School has been a forerunner in embracing innovation. In 1984, it became the first school in India to include IT in its curriculum, with its students pioneering computer education by appearing in CBSE Class XII computer examinations. This vision was strengthened under HH Maharaja Madhavrao Scindia II, and today, under the guidance of HH Maharaja Jyotiraditya Scindia, the School continues to lead with new-age pedagogies, blending global outlook with Indian ethos.

Ethos and Values

Set amidst the historic Gwalior Fort, the School balances tradition with modernity. Its daily practice of Astachal a sunset assembly of meditation, self-reflection, and prayer binds generations of Scindians with values of humility, spirituality, and ethical living. Guided by the principle of “Service Before Self”, the School has transformed nearby villages like Sonsa and Nathukapura through sustained social service, instilling in students a lifelong commitment to community welfare.

Global Recognition

The School has played a pioneering role in Indian education:

  • Founder member of the Indian Public Schools Conference (IPSC).
  • Member of the Round Square International Conference, connecting students worldwide through service and cultural exchange.
  • An inspiration for the evolution of many residential schools across India.

Environmental Stewardship

The Fort Biosphere curriculum fosters awareness of local ecology through the Eco Park, conservation initiatives, and efforts to replenish traditional water bodies (Taals), reflecting the School’s commitment to sustainability.

Celebrating 125 Years

In its 125th year, The Scindia School reaffirms its mission to nurture students into global leaders with Indian traditions at heart. Its alumni—distinguished in technology, infrastructure, arts, media, armed forces, civil services, and industry—stand as living testimony to its excellence.

Sports and Brotherhood

With a strong emphasis on sports and co-curricular activities, the School develops character, discipline, adaptability, and camaraderie. Boys from across India, speaking diverse languages and belonging to varied cultures, live and learn together, forging lifelong bonds that transcend boundaries.

The Commemorative Stamp

The stamp design in se-tenant form beautifully portrays the Madhav Pavilion, with an inset of the founder overseeing the School’s sprawling green campus. It symbolizes the journey of transformation of every Scindian—shaping strong minds in fit bodies, rooted in Indian values, yet prepared for a global stage.

The Department of Posts proudly issues this Commemorative Postage Stamp to mark the 125th Anniversary of The Scindia School, celebrating its enduring legacy of academic excellence, character building, and service to the nation.
