Commemorative Postage Stamp Celebrating 50 Years of Manipur’s Statehood

A Jeweled Land

The name Manipur literally means “A Jeweled Land”. Nestled in the lush green corner of Northeast India, the state is often described as an exquisite work of art created by nature itself. Known for its natural beauty and cultural richness, Manipur is where Rajarshi Bhagyachandra envisioned and created the famous Ras Lila, the classical dance form of Manipur, inspired by the grace of Lord Krishna.

Natural Splendor and Adventure

Blessed with diverse flora and fauna, Manipur is a haven for nature lovers and adventurers alike. From virgin forests, cascading waterfalls, and breathtaking hill sites to valley views and serene lakes, the state offers endless surprises for travelers. Its cuisine, especially unique fish delicacies, pampers the palate with flavors that are unmatched anywhere else.

Cultural Heritage and Arts

Manipur is home to vibrant classical dance traditions, including the world-renowned Manipuri Dance, which leaves audiences spellbound. The state is also famous for its handlooms and handicrafts, with markets in Imphal showcasing rows of colorful stalls, mostly managed by women entrepreneurs. These crafts reflect the artistic essence and creativity of the people.

Sports and Indigenous Games

For sports lovers, Manipur offers the Khuman Lampak Sports Complex in Imphal, housing all major stadia in a single venue. The state is also celebrated for its indigenous games and martial arts, which add to its cultural vibrancy and global sporting recognition.

Harmony of Communities

Manipur is a land of diverse communities—including Meitei, Naga, Kuki, Meitei Pangal, and others—who have lived together in harmony for centuries. Their folklore, myths, dances, handicrafts, and traditional games embody the mystique of nature and the spirit of togetherness. The hills echo with different sounds and sights, with churches, embroidered attire, and cultural traditions enriching the landscape.

Statehood and Democratic Journey

Manipur merged with the Indian Union and became a full-fledged state in 1972, with a 60-member Legislative Assembly, including reserved seats for Scheduled Tribes and Castes. The people of Manipur also participate actively in national governance, electing two Members of Parliament to the Lok Sabha and one to the Rajya Sabha.

Celebrating 50 Years of Statehood through Philately

To honor this remarkable journey, the Department of Posts issued a Commemorative Postage Stamp marking 50 years of Manipur’s statehood.

This special stamp reflects:

  • Manipur’s natural beauty and biodiversity.
  • Its rich cultural heritage of dance, folklore, and handicrafts.
  • The unity and resilience of its people.

The Manipur 50 Years Statehood Stamp is more than a collector’s delight it is a tribute to the jewel of Northeast India and its vibrant journey as a proud state of the Indian Union.
