Saint Arunagirinathar holds a cherished place among Tamil-speaking people, renowned for the significant events of his life, the excellence of his literary works, his profound knowledge, and his esteemed spiritual status. Though no authentic biographical records exist, traditions and his own writings suggest he was born in Tamil Nadu around six centuries ago. Initially leading a sinful life, Arunagirinathar’s inherent divine spark eventually prevailed, transforming him into a fervent devotee of Lord Muruga.

His divinely inspired songs, collectively known as Tiruppugazh, are celebrated for their captivating rhythmic patterns and profound philosophical content. Out of the 16,000 songs he is believed to have composed, about 1,300 have survived. Written in Tamil, these songs adeptly convey the complex concepts of Advaita philosophy in simple terms, making them accessible even to laypersons. His works exemplify a synthesis of Bhakti (devotion) and Gnana (knowledge), and are still sung by numerous devotees in homes, temples, and congregations.

In the pantheon of Bhakti saints, Arunagirinathar is esteemed alongside luminaries such as Tulsidas, Nanak, Tukaram, Meera, and Chaitanya. The Posts & Telegraphs Department is privileged to honor this great saint by issuing a commemorative stamp, celebrating his enduring legacy and contributions to spirituality and literature.
